Roster Expansion
Rosters expand on September 1st, which means a handful of minor league players will be packing their bags, boarding planes, and heading towards their big club for the final month of play in the big leagues.
Probably the most intriguing September call-up is Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price.
Price has made his way up the organizational ladder quickly and has topped out at Triple-A.
Rosters expand on Monday and he could be the most interesting call-up of 2008 and one that the Red Sox don’t want to see. The Sox are already having trouble catching the Rays in the East and adding an arm like Price could easily secure the division crown for the Rays.
Price was drafted as the number one overall pick in the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Vanderbilt.
Price is 12-1 at three different levels in 2008. He has a 2.30 ERA and has struck out 109 hitters in 109.2 innings pitched. Price has struggled with the Durham Bulls, going 1-1 in four starts, with a 4.50 ERA. Opponents are hitting .301 against him at Triple-A. Just a minor bump in the road for the prized left handed pitcher.
The Rays have a tough decision to make on whether or not they should call-up Price for the September stretch drive or let him have the remainder of the season off. The Triple-A regular season ends this Monday. The Bulls are in the playoffs. The team might wait until Durham ends their playoff run to call Price up to Tampa Bay.
The Bulls will take on the Louisville Bats from September 5-7 in the opening round of the playoffs.
