The Toronto Blue Jays claimed right handed pitcher Dirk Hayhurst off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Monday.

Hayhurst has brief Major League experience with the Padres, all of it coming in 2008. He was 0-2 with a 9.72 ERA in 10 games. He made three starts for the Padres as well.

When he wasn’t spending time in San Diego with the big club Hayhurst was pitching for Triple-A Portland.

Hayhurst compiled a 2-3 record with a 3.75 ERA over 46 games, including two starts. He struck out 98 batters over 84 innings pitched.

Hayhurst was drafted by the Padres in the eighth round of the amateur draft in 2003 and has compiled a 32-33 record with a 4.05 ERA.

The Blue Jays placed infielder Kevin Melillo on waivers to make room for Hayhurst on the 40 man roster.
